Whining noises will usually be a product of something wrong in one or doth differentials. ![]() In 2 High for 4W high, power flow is straight though from the input to the mainshaft to the driveshafts. Transfer cases do not use hypoid-type gearing. If you are ignorant of this fact you will be wasting a great amount of time. These units will be very noisy on the lift but quiet on the road. Many modern transfer cases, such as the NV140, 242, BW 4414, 4476, 4481, 44, use open planetary differentials to achieve a torque split between the rear and front axles. The chain and the planetary will create noise that appears louder than what you would hear on the road. The suspension is at full droop, and there is no shielding outside the cabin. In the first instance, all component noise is louder when you are under the vehicle with the wheels in the air. 99% of all transfer cases will sound noisy if operated on a lift. We get endless phone calls on our customer technical hotline regarding noisy transfer cases while the vehicle is on the lift. We are going to discuss here some of the problems and misconceptions that create wasted labor and lost earnings involving the diagnostic approach used in handling transfer-case problems. However, the drivers of those vehicles do not hear that noise if the tires are stock and the windows are closed. If you stand by any highway, you will hear a tremendous amount of tire noise from passing vehicles, as tires do make noise in contact with the pavement. There are no moving components in any car or truck that do not generate noise and vibrations, and the manufacturers spend a fortune on keeping those noises isolated from the passenger compartment. If you remove the unit and inspect it internally and find no broken or damaged components, how do you “see” a noise? This leads to a lot of wasted labor, frustration on the part of the technician and a bunch of time-wasting phone calls trying to get some diagnostic help. This is absolutely critical in issues related to noise, vibration and harshness. The high range of an AWD vehicle is typically 1:1 for every turn of the output shaft, there is one turn at each of the axle shafts.First off, once you remove the unit, the vehicle is now undrivable, which costs you the only true dyno you may have. They're designed to handle bad weather or light terrain but are not considered off-road vehicles. These are full-time four-wheel-drive systems that operate transparently to the driver. Manual control is typically a shifter found on the floor of the vehicle. They're also controlled manually, hydraulically, or electrically. If low vacuum is found at the case, check all the lines and reservoirs for cracks and wear. Transfer cases usually use ATF, but check with the manufacturer's specifications before servicing the fluid.Ī vacuum controlled unit requires a specified vacuum from the engine (17-21 "Hg). Gear-driven transfer cases have more strength, though, and are found on heavy applications. Many manufacturers today use chain-driven transfer cases because they're lighter and quieter than their gear-based counterparts. An independent transfer case attaches to the output shaft of the transmission and has a driveshaft for the front and rear axle. The most common transfer case is independent. The case can be independent off the transmission or married, where it may even share the same case. This enables the driver to place the vehicle from 2WD into 4WD (four-wheel drive) by moving of a gear selector, pressing a button or moving a slide. A part-time transfer case receives power from the transmission and transfers it to two or all four wheels of the vehicle. ![]()
